Editorial Reviews
The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara becomes this sprawling historical epic. As in Shaara's novel, director Ronald Maxwell focuses on a handful of major players to dramatize the events of July 1863, when the armies of the Union and Confederacy clash at the small Pennsylvania town of the title. Among them are Martin Sheen as General Robert E. Lee, who disagrees with his top advisor, General James Longstreet (Tom Berenger) over battle strategy, and Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a college professor whose unorthodox techniques save the day (and possibly the war) for his beleaguered army. Other cast standouts include Richard Jordan in his final film appearance as the ill-fated General Lewis Armistead, and cameo roles for Civil War buff Ken Burns and media mogul producer Ted Turner. Filmed on-location at Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg was shot as a television miniseries for Turner's TNT cable channel, but earned a limited theatrical release. by ScarlettSD on July 27, 2009 at Barnes & NobleGettysburg is a fabulous movie. It's so touching and sad that brother fought against brother but did so to save this great country. I've watched it many times. I have it on my IPOD too....The musical score is in my car CD player. It's just beautiful. I highly recomment this movie

by Anonymous on February 27, 2007 at Barnes & Noblethis a great movie for history or civil war buffs, or a history teacher to show to the class. I enjoyed this, it showed the battles and generals i read in the books overall i think its worth buying! Great movie!

by Anonymous on June 3, 2006 at Barnes & NobleGettysburg over all is very good. Though the movie starts off weak, with some pretty poor acting, it all comes together very well in the middle, and end. I think the best part of the movie is how both sides are portrayed, there are no “good guys” or “bad guys”. You tend to relate to both sides, not routing for any one side. The best actors in the movie are: Martin Sheen as General Lee, who really seems to take th role well as a God fearing General. They also did a good job in showing how the Confederate Soldiers had such deep admiration, and respect for General Lee. Sam Elliot also does a great job as General Buford. Every thing else is good, the battles are intense, the camera work is good, but the music is terrible, it doesn’t really tie in with the movie very well. Overall, it’s a great movie for a Civil War enthusiast, or History Buff.(Also recommended to show in schools.)

by Anonymous on June 3, 2006 at Barnes & NobleAnybody that is a Civil War buff have always been fascinated by the inner and tragic relationships between Yankee and Southern troops being friends. Armistead and Hancock was a relationship overlooked by many Civil War historians. The climax scene with Hancock shot and Armistead leading Pickett's charge was nothing I have ever seen in any type of war movie.

by Anonymous on February 18, 2006 at Barnes & NobleThe movie Gettysburg is based on the novel The Killer Angels by the same person who wrote Gods & Generals. The movie is superb to it's prequel Gods & Generals. The fights are long and intense, the acting is strong, and the characters are likeable. The cast is different, in G & G you had Lee as Robert Duvall, Gen Longstreet as I don't know, Jackson as Stephen Lang, and Col Chamberlain as Jeff Daniels. In Gettysburg you have Martin Sheen as Lee, Tom Berenger as Longstreet, Jackson as dead man, and Chamberlain as Jeff Daniels. The movie I think starts off with Sgt. Buster Killrain telling Chamberlain the news of "Fighting Joe" resigning. The 2 armies of the North and South accidently meet at Gettysburg when the South tried to get some shoes (really). You see the generals making plans for attack, hear speeches that aren't pointless, the fights at the first day ,Little Round Top, and Picketts Charge. This movie might be one of those when will the fight start. Don't worry, you'll get to see the fight. The fights are more intense than Gods & Generals, especially Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge. Who will Gettysburg? Can the South overrun a Little Round Top defended by a small group of union troops led by Col Chamberlain? Can the Union stop General Pickett and his 13,000 troop? The answers are in the movie and in the books. PS there is no movie call the Last Full Measure, because it is another novel. I just the novel could be turned into a good movie.

by Anonymous on April 16, 2004 at Barnes & NobleGettysburg is an epic story. It is one of the best Civil War movies available. The camera work and music are phenominal.
-
by Anonymous on February 11, 2004 at Barnes & NobleA terrific account of what some feel was the most important battle in American history. Despite an inappropriate and sappy sound track and a really terrible performance by Martin Sheen (as R E Lee) this is a GREAT MOVIE! There will be some historical ommissions and fictional interpertations with which real CW buffs will have trouble. But what the heck, it's a 3 hour Movie, not a 3 day re-enactment. What it clearly and dramaticly gives the viewer is absolute respect for the courage and faith of the mid 19th century American.
