Synopsis

Every inquisitive little girl wonders what it is really like to be a genuine princess. At the heart of Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots? lives an energetic, spirited, and contemporary child who has lots of important questions for her mom. Do princesses ride tricycles, climb trees, do chores, or have to eat the crusts of their bread? The mother's voice is timelessly reassuring as she answers her daughter's questions and advises her that being like a princess has to do with what we are on the inside. An illustrated picture frame surrounds a mirror at the end of the book which answers the little girl's most important question. This heart-warming book offers a gentle lesson about self-acceptance, and will inspire children to follow their dreams and leave their own mark on the world.

Annotation

When a little girl asks her mother about princesses, she learns that they are much like herself.

Heidi Hauser Green - Children's Literature

What does it mean to be a princess? A young girl and her mother talk about what princesses are like in this delightful, rhyming book. Inspired by her own daughter's question, "Do princesses wear hiking boots?," Carmela LaVigna Coyle has written a fun, witty book that touches on themes of childhood and identity. The little girl asks if princesses engage in a variety of activities, from climbing trees and walking in the rain to drinking sparkling punch and even doing chores. Her mother has a good answer for everything. Ultimately, the pair come to realize that being a princess isn't a matter of what one does, but what one is—inside. This is a book readers are sure to enjoy again and again. 2003, Rising Moon, Ages 4 to 8.

I was given this book as a baby gift by a friend. My daughter is still a little to young to appreciate it, but I love it! When she gets a little older, I know she will too.

I owned this book before having children. It reminded me of my childhood 'tomboy' days. There are not enough books about girls that like to just get dirty! In a society where all baby girls seem to be adorned with 'Princess' outfits (this drives me batty), it is nice to know that the author's little girl was comfortable enough to ask her the question 'Do Princesses wear hiking boots?' Three cheers to mommy for answering in the special way she did, thus sparking an awesome children's book about a little girl who likes to take off her dress every once in a while to feel the mud between her toes.

This is a must read for any little girl of any age enjoying life's journey of discovery. In a very subtle way, Carmela Coyle has captured the importance of being one's self and its connectedness to all possibilities in life. The illustrations are perfect and connect to the text in a humorous and uplifting fashion. This is delightful to read and anyone of any age would enjoy it thoroughly. I can hardly wait for her next books.
