This book is good for a quick reference, but does not go into alot of details on each person.

This is easily one of the best in-print reference guides for Western History from 800-present, especially when dealing with dynastic successions in unfamiliar geographic regions. It has very succinct, very accurate year by year encyclopedic entries on monarchs on the Continent, the UK and Russia (the last was a bit of a pleasant surprise, honestly). The author did a really nice job on this one.I keep it handy when reading Spengler and Toynbee and find it helpful in general at keeping a broad perspective on history. Also, it makes a fun coffee table book and conversation starter for the history buff. It's also just fun to page through sometimes.Highly recommended for the history buff, scholar, or student.
