Editorial Reviews
Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were already accomplished film comedians when they were paired by producer Hal Roach in 1926, but separately neither had been able to achieve the stardom they soon attained as a team. In the early years of the sound era, Roach boosted them from short subjects to feature films, and this two-disc set offers a pair of their starring vehicles released theatrically by M-G-M, The Devils Brother (a.k.a. Fra Diavolo, 1933) and Bonnie Scotland (1935). The first is an adaptation of a Eugene Scribe operetta, and while 18th-century Italy might seem an incongruous setting for the misadventures of Stan and Ollie, they fit right into this handsomely produced period piece. Members of the Roach stock company, including Thelma Todd and James Finlayson (from whom Homer Simpson got his trademark DOh!), lend admirable support here. Finlayson also joins the Boys in Bonnie Scotland, which finds them heading across the Atlantic to claim an inheritance that turns out to be nothing more than a pair of bagpipes and a snuff box. Subsequently tricked into joining the British army, theyre posted to India, where characteristic complications ensue. While neither of these two films is among the pairs very best, they nonetheless show Laurel and Hardy at the peak of their form and popularity. Making this collection particularly desirable are the unusually informative and accurate commentary tracks by film historians Leonard Maltin and Richard W. Bann. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
