If assembled upside down & the key won't fit in to "unlock" it, there is no need. -It is not locked! You might not pull it off by hand but you can knock it off w/ a hammer and a block of wood.Look at the shape of the notches in the shackle. They are not symmetric. The removable shackle is a great feature. It is the only lock that will work for my configuration.

I made the mistake of locking this upside down and now will need to cut it and.purchase another one. The padlock should not be constructed this way.

The price was right and I think I would have been happy with this lock for a long time....however, the act of taking the base of the lock apart from the clasp was foreign to me. I absentmindedly put the base in upside down making in impossible to fit the ket in (with the cables in the way). I will have to cut the lock off as it is cheaper than the cable. A heads up to users that the lock MUST only go in one way would help as it's VERY easy to make this mistake. Even better, if the lock would ONLY close key-side down it would be excellent. Again, very easy to close it improperly.
