"Hoosiers" is a heartwarming family sports film about a small town Indiana high school basketball team that wins the state championship. Gene Hackman, in the title role, is superb as he overcomes personal demons, parental/town pressures and players who don't know the meaning of the word "team". The relationships he has with the principal, a fellow teacher and his assistant coaches is spot on. Hackman, as Coach Norman Dale, uses his considerable coaching skills to become the architect of a "real" team of players not just individuals who play basketball. The story clearly demonstates the fact that a team of players can accomplish more than just a team of "all stars". Barbara Hershey, as Hackman's fellow teacher, is great in the role as an embittered spinster who feels a family obligation to stay in the small town. Dennis Hopper, the drunken father of one of the players, plays his role convincingly. Even if you are not a basketball fan you will enjoy this movie as it chronicles the path from small town zeroes to small town heroes.
