Editorial Reviews

Andy Tennant directs Ever After, a period romance that reimagines the Cinderella legend with several fresh twists. The Brothers Grimm arrive at the home of a wealthy Grande Dame (Jeanne Moreau) who speaks of the many legends surrounding the fable of the cinder girl before telling the "true" story of her ancestor. In flashback, the story then focuses on eight-year-old Danielle, daughter of a wealthy widower, a 16th-century landowner. After returning to France with his new wife Rodmilla (Anjelica Huston) and her two daughters, he dies of a heart attack. Ten years later, Danielle (Drew Barrymore) is now treated as a servant by the trio. Fortunately, she has an encounter with Prince Henry (Dougray Scott), who is fleeing an arranged marriage. Later, when Danielle poses as a Lady, the Prince takes an interest in her. Inventor-artist Leonardo da Vinci (Patrick Godfrey), accepting the French court's patronage, offers advice to Prince Henry on matters of the heart. George Fenton's music adds an accompaniment to the lush look of this period romance. Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Ever After is better than other movies. Drew Barrymore is the best actress ever. She is a real Cinderella. I saw Ever After almost 20 times and I will see it again. Yesterday I saw Ever After three times and I want to see it again. See this movie I know that you will enjoy it.

The thing that got me hooked on this movie is that I could relate to Danielle. We had certain things in common even though we were centuries apart. The way that it was also written, letting it include Danielle's grand-daughter, played by Jeanne Moreau, in the first scene was a superb opening. The actors and actresses helped bring out the Cinderella-esque quality in the video. I'm giving great thanks to Anjelica Huston, and the actors who played main roles like Leonardo DaVinci, Danielle's best friend Gustaf, and the evil step-sister (one's good!).The convincing love between Drew Barrymore and Dougray Scott was great. I could feel Danielle's pain throughout. Not to mention the actress who played the queen had a role on the television series ER. The movie is set in the 15th century of France, making the movie a renaisance time period. The clothes to match the time were good work of the designer, the dresses were fabulous but the crotch area of Prince Henry (Dougray Scott) made me blush a little. The movie was filmed on location and the castle where the Prince lived had beautiful towers all around with the tops sea blue with the ground set in cobblestone. The architechture of the castle made the movie come alive with the Cindrella-Snow White combination Fairy Tale.

Drew Barrymore has always been my favorite actress, because of this fact; I love every movie she is in no matter how stupid or well done it is. This movie is one of the well-done ones I would say. The casting to me could not be more perfect for the parts they played. Angelica Huston was the perfect example of the evil stepmother. Just her look alone to me was perfect. Danielle and Henry (Barrymore and Scott) worked so well together. In some movies they cast people well for the parts but as a whole they cannot interact well. My favorite part in the whole movie had to be the kiss!! It was so cute the way Danielle looked at Henry right before they kissed. If I were able to pick the best onscreen kiss it would definitely be them! Overall it was the perfect Cinderella love story. I laughed I cried and anyone who loves sappy love movies, this one is for you! =P

I love this movie and watched it many times. The most important lesson I learnt from it is to have passion for life and appreciate life every day. I'm a better person after watching this movie, I think Hollywood should produce more of such movies that inspire people to be better.

This movie made me so happy, it was a time honored tale with a twist. Young girls should watch this movie especially! This movie has something for everyone, whether it be sword fights, or the romance between Dougray Scott anbd Drew Barrymore! I think that Dougray was perfect for the role, as well as Drew! I hope that more flims come out like this, violence, profanity and sex are not the only ways to have a great movie! Although Dougray's crouth are was a tempting to stare at! Get the soundtrack, it rocks!

I think this movie is so cute. I believe it is a movie you'll love and watch over and over again. It shows dreams really can come true and that love doesn't have a status.

It is so important to show girls that the handsome prince is not the answer to all happiness. Drew portrays a 21st century Cinderella even though the story is set in a mid evil time - smart, strong, and very capable - and she is still a girl, looking for love. She would have been ''successful'' even without marrying the prince. The piece de resistance is the Leonardo DeVinci charactor - introducing him to young girls is the perfect next step for further exposure to art, science and history.

Have you ever wondered about the real tale of the Cinder girl? This beautiful film of medival France, during the time of palaces, balls, and princes in search of wives, tells the story of Danielle, an orphan servant of her step-mother. While the prince flees from an arranged marriage, Danielle's stepmother, Baroness Rodmilla, is determined to make her own gorgeous daughter, Marguerite, the future queen. But as Danielle and the prince's romance blossums, the Baroness is about to do anything in order to have a princess daughter. With beautiful music and scenery, Ever After, based on the novel by Wendy Loggia, is an enchanting tale of love and freedom in a new Cinderella perspective.

I saw this one last night. What a romantic, sweet movie! It does a good job of imagining the ''real'' story behind the Cinderella fairy tale. Drew Barrymore and Dougray Scott have great chemistry. Since myths, legends and fairy tales have some grain of truth, perhaps, in a time long forgotten, there was a prince or nobleman who fell in love with a commoner. One can always hope!

This movie is so good, I look at it every night. The telling of it is so wonderful that it makes me want to believe that dreams can come true. The whole cast was excellent. The lead actresses are to me living legends. I'm sure that Ms. Huston's late father, John Huston would be very proud of her. For Ms. Barrymore, her greatgrand father and uncles would be just as proud. Like I have said before the whole cast was great. When it first came out on video, I purchased 2 copies, just in case one got borrowed or destroyed some kind of way. I have just completed a order for the DVD and another VHS for my granddaughter. YES !!!! I love the movie.

I tire of all the people saying that it's predictable. Well DUH!!! We know how this movie turns out. We know who ends up where. I think that Drew, whom I've had a crush on since I was a kid, was phenominal. Angelica Huston was also decent as the evil wicked stepmother.

Drew Barrymore is definitely not your typical Cinderella with the blonde hair, blue eyes and sweet demeanor. The Disney classic is a great fairy tale, but I would always get upset at Cinderella's meekness. Danielle is certainly nothing like her, I'm happy to say! This movie had such incredibly funny moments. Leonardo Da Vinci displays an unexpected comic genius. The scene where the prince and Danielle encounter the gypsy is just classic. It's a fairy tale for grown-ups!

This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen! This is one movie you could watch over and over again and never get tired of it. I would recommend this masterpiece to anyone! I have seen this movie at least 10 times and I still cry. I would mostly recommend this movie to young teens, though the movie is suitable for all ages. The acting in this movie is marvelous and I am a big fan of Drew Barrymore. You would be stupid to not to go buy this movie!

Although we've all heard the Cinderella story many times, this version makes it feel fresh and new again. Unlike some Cinderella stories, "Ever After" has a complex and spirited heroine, lush costumes and settings, and more romance. The only other Cinderella tale I think of that's as perfect as this is "Ella Enchanted" (the book, not the movie). Even though "Ever After" is rated PG-13, it's totally family-friendly and should be loved by all Cinderellas.
