Purchased this desk on sale. It's hard to find a decent desk at an affordable price. I had looked at it a while back and have been looking at other desks for a while. For the price, this is a great deal.
Not sure about the complaints/reviews on cheap quality. Sure, it's pressed board but we're not talking like cheap book shelves - this thing is heavy! Each board is about 1/2" thick at least. Even the "cheap" backing is thicker than most pressed board backs.
Set up was not hard and the directions are very thorough, however, it does take a fair amount of time to put it all together, just as any would. Things are predrilled but other than that, you have to put every piece together. Plan to spend 2-3 hours on assembly.
The design is nice and roomy. I also purchased the hutch which was a nice addition to the L desk.
The one issue I had is the left door for the computer tower. During assembly, you put a backing on that cabinet. With the back on, that cabinet was not deep enough for my tower. I went back after it was all put together and removed the back off that section so I could slide my tower back further so the door would close. It was only about an inch too shallow but it was enough that I'd rather have no back on it. It was simple enough to remedy.
Now that it is all put together, I am loving it. It was definitely a lot of work putting it together but nothing difficult to understand - just time consuming and my hands are sore from all the screws, LOL! -

I bought this desk for my computer room. This desk was not that easy to put together. I suggest to anyone that wants to put this desk together, have a friend come over to assist.
This desk looks good and when put together and not a half bad desk, but you get what you pay for. This desk is made of cheap particle board. -

Quality of the desk is very poor. The finish on the black color peels off like a sticker. I have already had two replacement top sections replaced. Staples should have some kind of standard for the furniture they carry. [@] doesn't even carry this poor quality of desk.

Yes this is a cheap desk made from particle board, remember - you get what you pay for. I use this desk and hutch in my home office and I was looking for this particular style (L-shape with hutch) and couldn't spend a lot of money since I was buying it out of my own pocket. This meets my needs just fine. I use it on a daily basis and have had it for about 6 months now with no major issues. I wish the "L" portion was a little larger such as I would have if I worked in an office setting. My biggest recommendation is to pay for Staples to put it together for you. This thing is a pain to put together and has a zillion pieces - I thought my husband was going to kill me.

Take your time setting it up and you will be happy with the outcome. Follow the directions which are very well explained and you will end up with a decent desk. It took a while but I planned for that and once I was done, I was pleased with the looks of the desk. The drawers all open and close smoothly. The only part that took manuvering was fitting the two desk yops together but even that came out great. I is perfect for an at home office but obviously you get what you pay for so if you really need something that will take a lot of wear, you may want to choose something a little more quality.

This is the perfect use of space for my office. Setup was a little difficult and a couple of the parts were defective. I haven't called Altra yet, but I'm hoping they will make it right. This was more difficult because I had to install the drawer runners, as opposed to the lateral file that had them preinstalled. Overall this is a good product - nice to have the drawers and storage as well as a file drawer built into a space efficient desk.

If you take your time, and follow the instructions carefully, this desk isn't all that difficult to assemble. It does take quite a long time though. I think it took me and my daughter about three or four hours to complete the assembly. It's a very heavy desk though, make sure you set it up close to where you want to put it, but leave enough room to get behind it while you are assembling it. It get's really difficult to move around if you put the hutch on it too, but I liked it alot with the hutch!

The table is great, i have done 95% setup and using it on daily basis. There were few bolts missing and got them ordered thru manufacturer

I did the setup all alone though recommended to be with 2 persons so may have taken little more time.

The box for this desk is very heavy so unless you are very strong, you are going to need two people to carry it, especially upstairs.
You are going to need a decent amount of space to assemble this desk. The instructions call for you to sort of prep each board first with the necessary screws, cam nuts, etc. That means you'll set up one board and then have to find a place out of the way for you to work on the next 15 boards before actually using the first again.
Set up is very simple, but it is very time consuming. I am quite handy but it still took me a few hours to assemble because there are so many screws. I probably could have saved some time by using a drill, but the battery wasn't charged and I only used a single phillips screwdriver, which is the only tool you'll really need other than the allen wrench provided.
The instructions were very easy to follow. Although, I did notice one error where parts 1B and 2B were mislabeled. You should notice it before any mistakes when you see the picture doesn't match the parts.
I've seen other reviews where people say that the holes do not line up or pieces don't fit properly. I had absolutely no problem with any of that. Everything lines up just as it does in the instruction manual.
The desk seems incredibly sturdy for the price. The drawer bottoms are made of cardboard rather than wood, but that is typical of furniture in this price range. The drawer handles are plastic so I plan to stop by the hardware store to upgrade my handles. The file cabinet drawer is a bit tough to slide in and out, but I think some extra lube may help that problem.
My only real problem with this desk is that there is nothing really there to hide all of the wires and outlets. There is the hole in the corner to send wires through to the bottom neatly, but it still looks messy underneath the desk. -

Good solid wood furniture can be ridiculously expensive. Purchased this desk for my new small business because I am definitely on a budget. The desk is easy to assemble if you follow the directions, but it does take time if you are by yourself. Potentially 2-3 hrs. In addition, it is a particle board laminate construction (I think that is how you describe it). Because of this it really needs to be set up right where you need it. The particle board will not handle the stress of being picked up and moved. That being said the desk is a good value. It didn't cost $600. The work surface is adequate and there is some storage space available in the drawers. The drawers line up and move smoothly. On the whole it looks professional enough to use in a small business setting. You just have to be realistic about what you are purchasing. It isn't mahogany but that is why it is less expensive!

I really like the look of it but it was really little bit difficult to put together. A couple drawer fronts pulled out of screwed in sockets. There is not a lot of surface space to work on but I guess for the price I can't complain too much.

This is a nice desk, quality is not the best nor the worst. The directions are a bit sparse and all parts need to be oriented the same as the picture. The nuts and bolts are very poor quality and have a tendency to break easily. Overall not a bad piece of furnature.

Very nice when done, the directions need a little help. Make sure you orient the piece exactly as it's shown in the Instruction book. Not the best quality but far from the worst, the set looks great in the room. The addition of the Hutch finishes the look. Great for home use, may fall short in an industrial area. Well worth the price!

I got this to consolidate my home & work desks into 1 and OMGosh am I glad I did! I love this desk!! I wish it had a keyboard tray, but I will live. I did add some felt squares to the drawers so they don't slam when I shut them, but I really can't complain about anything with this desk.

I purchased this L-shaped desk to use in my home office. I don't need anything fancy, and this was on sale, which made it a good buy. It seems to go on sale every month and a half, so definitely wait until it's under $150. I like it enough that I purchased the same one for my office at work. It will allow for me to have two monitors and still have work space.
It wasn't hard to put together but it was tedious. It took time putting in each piece so it can be connected.
I would suggest as long as it's on sale. -

I own a Photography Studio so I wanted something modern and appealing to cliets. I searched for a Desk and a Hutch for a very long time, I was lucky to catch this when it was on sale but I would of payed full price for it as well. I was very please with it once I put it all together and sat down with it. It was more then enough room, very sturdy, and easy to use. If you follow the directions slowly and take your time you can put this together fairly quickly.

this desk took me all day to set up and I put together our ellipitical. TOO many pieces. one piece was mis-marked and after spending time on the c/s line Ifinally figured it out. The holes did not line up with the assembly on the right side drawers therefore NOT allowing the drawers to close right. VERY FRUSTRATING!!Because you don't find this out until the assembly is complete. UGH!!!
Staples expects the best from their venders, the customers should get the SAME IN RETURN!! I think the runners to these drawers should be put together and tried at the warehouse before making it to the customer!!
